How To Deal With A Road Accident In 6 Easy Steps

A road accident is often unexpected and unforeseen, and could happen to anyone. In the event of an accident, avoid reacting in a panic by knowing the important steps of what needs to be done. Below are the steps to follow when you are involved in a traffic accident:

1. Stay calm

• Stay calm will help you be in control of the situation.

2. Attend to injuries

• Always attend to yourself first if you are injured, then determine the extent of the injuries of others involved and seek medical help if necessary.
• Call Malaysia Emergency Response Services at 999 -get the ambulance if there are any injuries, talk to the police if there are any casualties.
• If there are no injuries, proceed with the following steps.

3. Safety first

• First of all, turn on the hazard lights to alert other motorists of your presence.
• If there is no casualties and you are able to drive, pull over to the side of the road to avoid traffic build up, and place the red triangle sign at least 50 meters away from the vehicle's boot. However, if there is casualties, leave the car as it is until the police and medical assistance arrive.
• For police investigation purposes, the vehicle must not be moved if there is casualties.

4. Gather information

• Note down the time of accident.
• Note down the registration number and model of any other vehicles involved in the accident. You can make full use of your smartphone's camera to gather these information.
• If possible, exchange basic information with the other driver, such as name, phone numbers and insurance details.
• Avoid argument, dispute or disagreement that will only worsen an already stressful situation.

5. Call auto assist

• Call auto assist. If your car insurance comes with an auto assist feature, this is the time to contact them.
• Do not commit to any settlement offered by a third party personnel who arrives at the scene of the accident.

6. Lodge a police report

• Drive or tow your vehicle to the nearest police station to lodge an official report within 24 hours.
• Obtain a copy of the police report and other investigation reports for the insurance claim process.
